What is Kindle?

Simple Answer: The Amazon Kindle is a portable e-Book reader.

Complex Answer: Amazon Kindle is a software, hardware and network platform developed by Amazon.com. It uses wireless connectivity through Wifi or 3G  to enable users to shop for, download, browse, and read e-books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and other digital media.

The Kindle DX line features larger screens than the main Kindle line. It is said to be more suitable for displaying newspaper and textbook content. Unfortunately, there is currently no Kindle model which preserves the print edition page numbers used when citing sources in school papers and scholarly research. You can view the Amazon Kindle product here.

Amazon has also introduced Kindle software for use on various devices and platforms. Microsoft Windows, iOS, BlackBerry, Mac OS X (10.5 onwards), Android and soon Windows Phone 7 may all host the Kindle software.

The Kindle hardware devices use an e-ink electronic paper display that features 16 shades of grey, which allows for a long battery life and easy readability. Content for the Kindle can be purchased online and downloaded wirelessly in some countries, however not all countries have adopted this new technology.

Amazon’s wireless Whispernet technology is a new 3G technology that uses Sprint’s national high-speed (EVDO) data network. This combination enables users to wirelessly search, discover, download, and read content on the go. Whispernet is free for residents of the United States, and is available in over 100 countries.

Kindle always ships with a Kindle micro-USB cable that allows you to charge Kindle from a computer. In addition, some countries will receive their Kindle package with an additional U.S. power adapter.

Power adapters for other countries are also available and can be added to your Kindle order at the time of purchase or purchased separately..
